Acetylene Plants

Acetylene remains dissociated at pressures above 15 psig and produces lamp black & hydrogen unless it is dissolved in a solvent. Moreover, the heat generated from dissociation increases the risks of explosion. Acetylene is primarily manufactured by the reaction of water with chemical compound called calcium carbide. It is also produced by thermal decomposition of hydrocarbons, or by partial combustion of oxygen and methane.
